Help & FAQ

Answers to common questions about buying, selling, trading, and notifications on BoardgameMarketplace.

Getting started

Why does the site need my location?

Every listing is local: you only see games from sellers within 80 kilometers of you, so you can meet in person. If you're not logged in, we estimate your area from your connection. Once you log in, you're asked to share your location (rounded to about 1 km), and you can update it in your profile settings.

Can I browse without an account?

Yes. Anyone can browse listings and game pages near them. You need an account to message sellers, save listings, keep a wishlist, or sell.

How do I sign up or log in?

Use "Sign in with Facebook"; your account is created the first time you log in. There's no separate email-and-password sign-up.

Does the site handle payments?

No. You pay the seller in person when you meet, and nothing is paid through the site. A listing's accepted payment methods are the ways that seller will take payment.

Buying

How do I contact a seller?

Open the listing and press "Message Seller". You get one conversation per listing, and new messages appear as they arrive.

What does "Pending" mean?

The seller has agreed a deal with one buyer and is holding the game for them. While it's pending, you'll both see safety tips for meeting in your chat.

How is a sale completed?

After you meet, the seller marks the listing as sold. As the buyer, you can also ask the seller to mark it sold; if they don't answer within 7 days, it's marked sold automatically.

What if we agreed a deal but the other person goes quiet?

If one of you hasn't written in your chat for 7 days, you'll both get a reminder; after 10 days, the listing goes back on sale automatically. That doesn't happen while a buyer is waiting on a "mark it sold" request.

When can I leave a review, and why might it say "unconfirmed"?

You can review the seller once they've marked the sale completed with you. If the seller declined your request to mark it sold, or relisted or cancelled the listing while it was pending with you, you can still leave a review, but it's labelled unconfirmed and doesn't count toward their rating.

How do wishlists and wishlist alerts work?

Add a game to your wishlist, with a maximum price and minimum condition if you like. When a matching copy is listed near you, you're told straight away or in one daily summary, as you choose in your notification settings.

What does saving a listing do?

It keeps the listing in your Saved Listings so you can come back to it. If its price drops, you get a notice in your Alerts tab (at most once a day per listing).

Why did I get a message saying a listing is pending or sold to someone else?

Unless you switch them off, you're told when a listing you messaged about is put on hold for, or sold to, someone else, so you can look elsewhere. To stop these, turn off "On Hold for Someone Else" or "Sold to Someone Else" in your notification settings. If a listing you were chatting about is cancelled, everyone who messaged about it is told.

Selling

How do I list a game?

Choose the game first (from its page or the search), then set the price, condition, payment methods, a description, and 1 to 5 photos. Your location must be set, because listings are local.

What do the conditions mean?
New & Sealed
Never opened; the original shrink-wrap is intact.
Like New
Opened but barely or never played. Every component is present, with no visible wear.
Very Good
Played with care. Light wear on the box corners; all components present and in great shape.
Good
Noticeable wear, such as box scuffs or worn card edges. All components present and fully playable.
Acceptable
Heavy wear or damage, such as split box corners, marked cards, or replacement pieces. Still complete and playable; describe any problems in the details.
Parts Only
Missing or broken components, so it can't be played as it is. Sold for spare parts.
How should I price my game?

The listing form shows how many people nearby want the game and, once enough people nearby have listed it recently, what it usually lists for. Use that as a guide; the price is up to you.

What's the difference between cancelling and relisting?

Cancelling takes a listing off the marketplace and moves it to your Cancelled tab. Nothing is deleted, and buyers who messaged you are told and can no longer reply (except a buyer it was pending with). Relisting a pending listing puts it back on sale; relisting a sold or cancelled one creates a new copy of it.

Can I cancel all my listings at once?

Yes. In My Listings, on the Available tab, use "Cancel All Available". Listings that are pending with a buyer, or under review, aren't touched.

Why was my listing hidden?

A listing is hidden from buyers if you turn on vacation mode, if you haven't used the site for 45 days (coming back brings your listings back), or if a moderator hides it. If a moderator hid it, the listing shows the reason, and you can contact support to ask for a review.

What is vacation mode?

"Vacation Mode" is a switch in your profile settings that hides all your available listings while you're away. Turn it off, and they're back on sale.

Can I reply to a review?

Yes. On your own profile, you can add one public reply to any review of you, and edit or remove it later.

Is there a limit to how many games I can sell?

In some countries, the law asks marketplaces to report people who sell often, so sellers there have a yearly limit on how many games they can sell or have for sale. If you reach it, the listing form tells you, and you can list again on 1 January, or when one of your listings is cancelled.

Trades

How do trades work?

Sellers can mark a listing "Sale or trade" or "Trade only". In a chat about such a listing, either person can propose a swap of games, with optional cash either way.

How do I make, counter, or withdraw an offer?

In the chat, press "Propose a trade" and pick up to 5 games from each side. You can offer any of your listings marked "Sale or trade" or "Trade only". Games on the other person's wishlist are listed first and marked, since those offers are the most likely to be accepted. The other person can accept, counter with changes, or decline; you can withdraw your offer until they answer.

What happens when an offer is accepted?

Every game in the trade is held for the other person (pending), and other open offers for those games are closed. Each game then shows that it's part of an agreed trade.

How do we finish a trade, and what if it falls through?

Once you've met and swapped, one of you presses "We've swapped" and the other confirms (it completes automatically after 7 days). Until then, either of you can press "Trade fell through", and every game goes back on sale.

What are trade matches?

When someone nearby offers a game on your wishlist for trade and wants a game you're offering for trade, you're both told once in your Alerts tab. You can turn this off in your notification settings.

Notifications

What notifications will I get, and how do I change them?

Messages, deal updates, wishlist matches, price drops, and trade activity arrive in your inbox or Alerts tab. In the Notifications tab of your profile settings, you can choose, for each kind, a message, a pop-up with sound, a daily summary, or nothing.

Can I get notifications on my phone?

Yes. In the Notifications tab of your profile settings, press "Turn on notifications" and allow it; anything that would pop up then also arrives on that device, even with the site closed. On iPhone and iPad, add the site to your Home Screen first.

What's the Alerts tab?

A tab in your inbox for automatic notices rather than chats: wishlist matches, price drops on saved listings, and trade matches.

What is the daily summary?

If you choose "One summary message a day" for wishlist matches, you get one notice a day listing the new matches, instead of one notice per match.

Chats and safety

Why can't I reply in a chat?

A chat locks when the listing was sold to or cancelled for someone else, when one of you blocked the other, when an account was suspended or deleted, or when a moderator froze it. The chat stays readable, and a note explains why it's locked.

How do I stay safe when meeting someone?
  • Meet in a busy public place, such as a game store, a café, or a police station's safe exchange zone.
  • Tell a friend where and when you're meeting, or bring someone with you.
  • Check the game before paying: open the box and compare the pieces and condition with the listing.
  • Pay in person, at the handoff. Never pay in advance, and never share passwords or verification codes.
  • If something feels wrong, leave. You can report this chat from this page.
How do I block someone, and what does it do?

Use "Block" on their profile or in a chat. Neither of you can message the other or see the other's listings; they aren't told, and you can unblock them from your profile settings.

How do I report a listing, chat, or review, and what happens next?

Use "Report" on it and choose a reason. A moderator reviews it; reporting alone never hides anything, so nobody can take down a listing just by reporting it.

Account

How do I change my language, currency, or location?

In your profile settings. The language can also be changed from the menu at the top of every page.

How do I delete my account?

In your profile settings, under "Danger Zone", use "Purge My Account Data". Your profile, wishlists, saved listings, and unsold listings are removed, deals you're part of are released, and past sales and reviews stay under "Deleted user". It can't be undone. If other members have reviewed you, you choose whether to keep your reputation in case you come back within a year (signing in with the same Facebook account restores your account) or to delete permanently (that Facebook account then can't sign up again for a year). You can't delete it while one of your listings is pending with a buyer.

How do I contact support?

Use the contact form (the link is at the bottom of this page). You don't need to be logged in.
